Join us at The Dayton Woman’s Club for another engaging local history presentation with Dayton Historian Andrew Hershner.
This presentation explores the story of the Miami and Erie Canal and the important role it played in shaping Dayton’s growth and development. Andrew will trace the canal’s construction through the city, its route through Dayton, and the system of hydraulics that helped power local industry.
Through historic photographs and stories, guests will get a closer look at the buildings, businesses, and activity that once lined the canal, offering a glimpse of a very different Dayton. Andrew will also explore the canal’s decline and eventual disappearance from the city landscape.
Held inside our historic Victorian mansion, the evening offers a fascinating look at a chapter of Dayton history that helped shape the city we know today.
We are open to the general public. Our venue is fully accessible with a ramp entrance.
About the Speaker: Andrew Hershner
Andrew Hershner is a widely respected "Daytonologist" and a walking encyclopedia of local history. Known for his deep passion and encyclopedic knowledge of the Miami Valley’s past, Andrew is a sought-after speaker who delivers insightful and entertaining presentations on every chapter of Dayton’s story—from its industrial boom years to its cultural and civic transformations.
As co-administrator with Robert Roberson of the popular “History of the Daytonians” Facebook group, Andrew fosters a thriving community of history enthusiasts and shares regular content that brings Dayton’s legacy into the spotlight. His extensive personal archive and vivid storytelling make his talks an unforgettable experience for history buffs and curious minds alike.
